The Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society (WDCS)

WDCS is an international not-for-profit conservation organisation, with offices in Australia , UK , Germany , Argentina and the United States . Whales, dolphins and porpoises, collectively known as cetaceans are their passion at WDCS, and they fight to protect these beautiful and sentient creatures, and the environment on which they depend.

There are over 80 species of whale, dolphin and porpoise in the world. They are an incredibly diverse group of animals from the enormous blue whale, which at around 30m in length is the largest animal ever to have lived, to New Zealand ’s tiny Hector’s dolphin, whose babies are the size of your average football! To the sperm whale which has the largest brain on the planet and dives deeper and far longer than any other mammal to the humpback whale, which sings some of the most complex songs in the animal kingdom.

WDCS works to stop whaling for good. This barbaric practice should be consigned to the history books for ever. WDCS is also taking on global fisheries bycatch which is responsible for the deaths of over 300,000 cetaceans every year. WDCS is safeguarding whale and dolphin populations and are defending the places they need to survive, WDCS’s partnership with the UN Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species (CMS) is enabling them to take the fight to the international stage. WDCS is also hard at work taking the message further, with the WDCS education team, speaking to schools, and community groups, to educate, inspire and activate others.

WDCS also funds vital cetacean research around the world and over 80 projects in 40 countries on 6 continents have been funded. WDCS is not government-funded but funded by support from people like you through donations and their dolphin and whale adoption schemes.
